I saw many programs on TV after 9-11 which discussed this exact subject. One definition which I particularly liked was one which "Charlie Gibson" on Good Morning America said, that a "hero" is an ordinary person who does something extraordinary to help or save another. (I am presuming that one does not need to qualify this by saying the the something extraordinary should be for good & not evil.)
