My all-singong all-dancing Soundblaster Audigy sound card comes with a remote control that's got more buttons than a Chinese moblie phone. I think it would do what you want, but I have no idea how to use it! On the other hand, my Rio portable CD player can read MP3, so I can put 15 hours of music on it and set it to "random", like a convention CD player; I could plug it into my stereo or my pc if I wanted to use speakers instead of headphones.
These are rather expensive alternatives, so they may not be much use to you ...
