Thread Name: Is Mudcat slow right now?
Subject: RE: Is Mudcat slow right now?
I've been putting a lot of work in on the servers since Sunday which is slowing things down. I probably have another week or so of stuff to do before I can achieve the final goal which is more reliability and speed. Ragtime is now doing what Matilda did, so it is not serving the Mudcat anymore. ragtime.mudcat.org also goes to Shorty. I have a new server almost ready to roll, but have a dilemma. Apparently the motherboard was recalled by Intel. When the memory maxs out, the system reboots. As Intel says "The issue is with the Memory Translator Hub component that can cause some systems to intermittently reset, reboot or hang." That may seem reasonable, or even helpful, but I am hesitant to accept that that is any good for the long term. Plus Intel says "In addition, the issue can, under extreme conditions, potentially cause corruption". Problem is that Intel will only send me a monetary credit once I send them the motherboard. So I have to wait for that before I can get the server running or put up the cash for a new motherboard and wait for Intel's check. In the end though, Shorty will soon be able to retire to the sunny state of mirror/backup server.
An update on Matilda. It seems that the primary hard drive has a physical error, just got old or too hot (big heat waves here of late). Finally wrestled her to boot, but the data that I want on her drives is stuck in a software RAID configuration that was destroyed in the crash. In English, that means there are 4 hard drives that Windows NT doesn't understand. Those 4 hard drives stored 6 years of development, documents, backups, MP3's and all the things I wanted to keep forever. We did this because Matilda was backed up every week or so until our backup tape drive died over a year ago. Not giving up yet…
