My page-a-day cat calendar says: "Polydactyl cats [cats with extra toes] were especially prized by old-time sailors because they were considered lucky – they were also excellent mousers." This got me to wondering whether there are any shanties or other sea songs that mention seafaring polydactyl cats and the extra luck they bring (and/or their prowess as mousers). Anybody know of such songs?
