A large part of the problem is that self-taught guitarists, or guitarists who were taught by self-taught guitarist (who, in turn, were taught by….ad infinitum) use such a mish-mash of terminology that it's hard for them to communicate with each other, much less carry on a reasonable discussion with other musicians, especially those with formal training.
