While I don't think that there is any excuse at all for Mr. Ashcroft's method of operations or for the media hounding someone, if that's what they're actually doing, I also think it would be a shame if an investigation were to be called off because the subject protested too much, and he later turned out to be guilty. There are a lot of indications pointing at Mr. Hatfill and, if I were in his shoes, I would welcome the chance to be proven innocent.

Yes, I know that the criteria in our justice system is "innocent until proven guilty", but the media tend to use the other one: "newsworthy until proven boring".
