Morticia, a piece of advice I give to my [sailing] students is: When you go in the water, come up laughing--everyone will think you are a good sport and will probably laugh with you.

It also helps not to stand on dignity. That's like building on sand. If you don't tell them you feel miserable, they won't come around commiserating and making you feel worse.
