There is a tune by Lowell Mason called "Meribah". The Cyber Hymnal has it as the background music (with MIDI link) for Awaked by Sinai's Awful Sound (Lordy, what a title!) among other texts. A portion of this tune is given in three Esperanto hymnals for the text "Kristo vivas" (a translation of the Swedish Kristus lever — underbara ord). The earliest (Evangelia Kantaro, 1952) calls it "Swedish melody, 1884", while the other two (Adoru kantante, 1971, and Adoru: Ekumena Diserva Libro, 2001) credit Mason with it (but don't mention anything about an arranger). So my question is, is the "Swedish melody" form what Mason composed (and the form given in The Cyber Hymnal, Lutheran Book of Worship and other English hymnals, an expansion by some arranger or editor [if so, who?]), or is the longer version what Mason wrote, and the shorter one some Swede's truncation, perhaps to fit the "Kristus lever" text? Or is the shorter version an anonymous Swedish folk melody which Mason developed into a longer hymn tune? Or what?
