Thread Name: Lyr ADD: Old Richmond Prison (from Ralph Stanley)
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Richmond Prison, Ralph Stanley
Well, the Old Richmond Prison was the State Penitentiary in the state capital, Richmond. It was built in the late 1800's and was where most violent criminals did their time. Locally known as Spring Street because the main doors opened on to Spring Street, it housed Virginia's electric chair and up until it was torn down in the late 1980's all of Virginia's executions were carried out there. The land is now part of Richmond's War Memorial.

Richmond is a better place without it because it was it was a horrid looking structure located within a few blocks of the cities downtown. Good riddance...

And yes, it has not been that long that Virginia was still blowing folks up that electric chair.
