As for feeling unnecessary - I just find a cat and put a tin of food in front of it. The cat will look up at me as if to say 'yeah, and?' I will go away for 5 minutes. Come back, the cat will still be there, recognising the food tin, but being totally unable to get to it, because unlike me, it has no opposable thumb and can't reach the tin opener anyway.

I open the tin, give the cat the food. Someone needs me.
