Um, as a young people's librarian, I can say that (thanks to people like me who see it as our job!) young readers ARE picking up other books; they only need the suggestion that if they enjoyed the Harry books so much, they needn't wait for Harry #5 to read another book. Wynne-Jones, Ibbotson, McKillip, any number of excellent fantasy authors. or school stories. or boys' stories. or girl vs. boy story (Naylor, The Boys Start the War). Good vs. evil. Lloyd Alexander. Susan Cooper. You get the drift.

More kids have picked up Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy than I would have believed.

And I was one of those turned off toC S Lewis even as a kid because he obviouusly did NOT like girls very much ...
