It's a known fact that most people suffer from a hearing loss in the upper frequencies as they age; with the exception of those people who USE those upper frequecies. I haven't heard of this being one sided but it's quite possible that you are seeing this effect. You use the left ear more, so it is more sensitive.

Regarding playing position. In the Middle East, the one stringed stick fiddle is played as follows.
The player squats cross legged on the floor.
The fiddle is held vertically in front of him with the spike between his toes and the string facing away from hime.
