I think that, for better or worse, a lot of "folk" musicians are very chauvinistic in their musical tastes. I know bluegrassers who hate Irish music and old-time players who hate bluegrass etc. I think The Mudcat appeals to people with a more eclectic view of what "folk" music is. And it also appeals to people who don't mind side-dishes of political discussion, social commentary or inane humor thrown in with the main course of musical exploration. Not for everybody, never will be, probably wasn't meant to be.
