Of course, by this logic, you know the answer to the riddle isn't human being -- it's a human man. Otherwise, a woman would not be able to breast feed her baby -- so we get the full compliment of a dozen.

And now that I'm talking about it, I'm remembering that the metaphor of the original was "a house with 10 doors"... It's a more vibrant image -- there's generally more energy going on with a house than a log.

Even today, we use the house metaphor to talk about people, as in: "The lights are on, but nobody's home." and "He has a lot going on upstairs." But we "sleep like a log."
