Have you looked down the back of the couch? Most stuff ends up down there, even if you lost it in the bedroom.. it's a sort of gravitational anomaly, sofas suck.

Seriously, backups are the only way... or expensive retrieval. Things are never lost, especially when it's the IRS looking for it....
