I know how you must've felt, Dave. I once saw a squirrel get hit by a car ahead of me but be left only severely (and probably mortally) wounded. I didn't have time to reflect long, but I did what seemed like the only humane thing, namely, try to run directly over it, to put a quick end to it. Unfortunately, some folks can't distinguish between the goriness of a method of killing and the amount of pain and suffering it inflicts on the victim. (I wonder if the woman who accused you of cruelty had intended to pick up the wounded fox and take it to a vet.)
