Here yesterday, gone today...that link in the initial post doesn't get to the story any more, so here's my cut-and-paste of it:

Sunday, October 13, 2002 Couple's love ageless

By CAROLINE PHILLIPS, Ottawa Sun

An 86-year-old bride and her 80-year-old groom proved yesterday that you're never too old to tie the knot.

Virginia Cameron and Vernon Lang got hitched in a simple ceremony at the Gloucester Senior Adults Centre on Ogilvie Rd. before some 100 friends and family.

"We were two lonely people who are no longer lonely," said Lang while standing next to his blushing bride.

The couple began courting after their spouses, both of whom suffered from Alzheimer's disease, passed away last year.

"Life and joy are there for us at any age," said officiant Bonnie Lee, a minister with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ottawa. "It's up to us to reach out for it."

The seniors became friends seven years ago through the Fellowship.

SHARED INTERESTS

They soon discovered they shared many interests. Cameron belongs to the Raging Grannies, while Lang works for Human Rights Internet and is a former federal NDP candidate.

And, of course, there was also a magic spark. "He's been like a school boy in love. He's just so happy," said Christina Wanke, a co-worker of Lang's.

The couple's children said they were pleased to see their parents discover companionship in their twilight years.

"I think it's great when two people find each other, it doesn't matter what their age is," said Cameron's son John, while popping open several bottles of sparkling wine.

The best man was Lang's son David, while the matron of honour was, for the second time, Cameron's sister Margery Chahley.

For their honeymoon, the newlyweds are driving to the Maritimes.
