The US Navy is "dry" unlike the Royal Navy that used to run on "rum, buggery and the lash" (or alternatively, "rum bum and concertina")so the allusion may not work over there! When I was a sea cadet back in the dark ages rum below decks and gin in the wardroom were virtually compulsory.
