I remain a little confused by the various uses in this thread of the words bluegrass and “blue grass”.

I believe the single word bluegrass only properly refers to the style of accoustic country music created by Bill Monroe, et al. Any other reference—whether Kentucky's nickname, the name of a plant, or the name of Monroe's band—is properly spelled as two separate words, Blue Grass.
