My first(and indeed last) experience of a Hull audience was a festival down at some docky sort of place in a marquee, and I was with the Boat Band,including in the line-up the legendary Creole musician JC Gallow from Mamou, Louisiana. After our set, which went well, I was heading for the bar and was approached by two elderly very merry ladies, probably fishwives or something of that sort. One seized me by the arm, breathed beer in my face and said "Ee, lad, your darkie's very good".
   A moment me and JC have always cherished.
