Thread drift...we math/music geeks are allowed to do that, right?

I always loved the early (1980's) discussions of using computers to teach math. I also vaguely remember something about using computers to actually write/compose music. Anybody else heard about this? I'm trying to remember exactly what I read...I seem to remember that the initial forays into this field were fascinating.
