Good book about the incident:

"The Emerald Whaler," William J Laubenstein, originally published by Andre Deutsch. Don't know the original publication date - my copy is a book club copy that I think came out in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The latest date for any of the material in the bibliography is 1956, so it couldn't be earlier than that.
