I had a musical epiphany at last night's session. I was playing my guitar seated dead in the middle of four fiddlers playing Irish music. One is a dyed-in-the-wool Irishman who learned the tunes on Da's knee. One is a classically trained violinist who attends Willie Clancy every Summer and thinks Ben Lennon is one step below God. One would really rather be playing old-time, but Irish is what's happening at the moment and it's cool too. One is a converted bluegrasser.

So here I am, sitting in the middle of these four fine fiddlers playing my guitar. I'm listening to how each of them is playing the same tune, yet with subtle stylistic differences reflective of their individual backgrounds. Suddenly, it dawns on me that if I were to die and go to Heaven that this is what I would want it to be like! No offense to any of the Mudcat harpers out there, but they can keep those golden harps. Give me a bunch of good fiddlers and stick my butt in the middle of 'em playing rhythm guitar and I will gladly spend eternity right there!
