Perhaps you have been reading the wrong polls, Peter T. At least from my point of view.

You may not have heard, but the Repulicans in that 30% turnout election won the majority in the House, and in the Senate. Not all Republicans consider themselves conservatives, of course, and not all Democrats consider themselves liberal. But more people who (at least in my opinion) consider themselves conservatives voted Republican than voted Democrat.
