When I started drinking, I lived in Kent and most of the glasses were dimpled. I can't remember why I first had a pint in a straight glass but I know I found it far more pleasant to hold and to drink from. I ended up doing the opposite of what stigweard suggested - asking for a straight glass in an area where the normal was a thing with a handle on.
