One trick to make a room look bigger, that my Dad used to use many years ago, is a drop frieze.

You have a white ceiling and continue the ceiling paint about a foot or more down the top of the walls. Then you run a wallpaper border around the color join.

It's a bit old fashioned, but now that -retro- is an in word, perhaps you could get away with it.
