I suppose people have to teach their children geography themselves, if they want it done right. When I was about 9 or 10 years old, my Dad used to tape a big US map and a big world map to the wall, and we'd take turns quizzing each other. I learned all the US state capitols that way and most of the world capitols. Of course that was before all the African nations changed their names and before the Soviet Union broke up. That makes for more countries to remember.
