Bee-dubya-ell, armadillos are known as nature's speed bumps on the highways of the deep south in the good ol' U. S. of A. They are one of the few known natural sources of traffic speed impairment found in the U. S. except for possums which, as Spaw has stated, are in fact armadillos who have shed their shells and through many generations of inbreeding have developed an actual fear of living and so spend most of their lives practicing for their eventual demise by playing dead. With few predators to keep their populations down, vast communities of these hard working fellows have been uprooted from their natural habitat, transplanted or reintroduced and allowed to florish where traffic speeds were becoming critical along some of the nation's busiest highway systems.
