I took violin lessons when I was in elementary school for a year. Then took a sight singing course in High School when I was in chorus. It came in very useful when I searched out obscure pieces in collections of folk songs, like Vance Randolph's, and could figure out melodies for songs that no one else knew or had ever heard. "Drunkard's Lone Child" was a crowd pleaser.
