It also helps a lot to have people to play with. I doubt if I would have reached my current level of banjo playing if I hadn't chased fiddle tunes in a contradance band for ten years. However, I don't read music and don't really understand how the music I'm familar with is put together, and I get easily frustrated when I encounter different musical subcultures. I'm not sure there is a theory that would help me. I probably need a new mentor.
