Thread Name: Tune Req: Young Redin
Subject: RE: Tune Req: * Young Redin *
Here I am in my lunchbreak at work. Glad you are interested in my version of Young Redin. I love the magical and superstitious elements in it, and the mediaeval form of justice at the end - trial by fire.
As Anahata ( treewind) says, I put the ballad together from bits and composed the tune myself, using as a model a variant of Young Hunting collected by Maud Karpeles and Cecil Sharp in the Appalachians. The original tune is printed as the last song in the oddly-named 'Eighty English Folk Songs' edited by Maud Karpeles - all of which were songs collected on Cecil Sharp & Maud Karpeles' expeditions to the Appalachians during the last century. ( The reasoning behind the title of the book is that the songs are versions of ballads lyrical songs and others that have been collected in England at some time.)My tune was adapted to carry a refrain and accommodate a different set of words that were complied from English rather than American or Scots sources.
Hope you all like it - when you manage to hear it!
