As far as file sizes goes, the Sound Studio makes AIFFs. If you want to send them by email, use iTunes to turn them into MP3s forst -- you get a huge compression factor, and a reasonable reduction in quality. MP3s are sufficient for most purposes. I turned all the Mudcat CDs cuts into AIFFs before cutting the masters in order to have the bet sound I could, but for mailing them MP3s is the way to go.

How was Sound Studio screwing things up? As M Ted says it is probably not memory per se. But which version of the OS are you running?
