Me thinks it's both a matter of context and term availability / useage. Since mike is, percentage wise, used mostly to shorten the formal name Michael then it is 'taken'. The argument applies also to bike for bicycle instead of bic since bic is a brand name for a pen. So to avoid confusion mic is appropriate both within the context of the discussion and the availability of the term.
