I retune my mandolin as follows: Lower one of the E strings all the way down to A (same as second strings), and the other E down to D. Raise one of the G strings to A, lower the other G string to F#. I think this is the same as Monroe's tuning, but there are some variations out there. Ricky Skaggs' version of the song is quite good, also.
