Lomax has it as first appearing in a printed broadside in San Francisco & attributed to an enterainer named Dick Brown around the time of Cheyenne's gold boom (1874 or there after).From The Folk Songs Of North America-Lomax for more see Cowboy Songs-Lomax, Belden or Flanders or Laws. Barry
