I sing this (every year at about this time!) and have always sung 'grins at each newcomer' here. For one thing, it rhymes with 'summer'. What's a coler, anyway?
Having said that I wrote it down from the singing of the blessed Martin Carthy, on Folkweave (or was it Folk on 2?) many years ago - I may have it all arsy versy.
