Sad news indeed, and quite a loss.

Apparently, the obituary that Catspaw read was incorrect. News reports are now saying that Maurice Gibb had a cardiac arrest before the emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage, but that he lived for a time after that. He had been rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami on Thursday night (January 9th) with severe stomach pains but did not pass away until late Saturday or early Sunday morning.

Late yesterday, Barry Gibb made a statement to the BBC on behalf of the family, questioning Maurice's treatment at the hospital. His words, quoted on ABCNews.com: "The fact that they had to operate on Maurice during the shock of cardiac arrest, is very questionable, and we will pursue every factor, every element, every second of the timeline of the final hours of Maurice's life. We will pursue that relentlessly. That will be our quest from now on." He also said he had been told that Maurice's intestines were twisted because of a congenital defect and that doctors had removed 80 percent of his stomach during the surgery.

After the surgery until his passing, Maurice's condition had been listed as critical but stable. There's no word yet about the immediate cause of death or what caused his condition to destablilize. A second cardiac arrest? Internal bleeding? I certainly don't blame the family for wanting to be sure that it wasn't caused by some mistake on the part of hospital staff. Whatever the reason, Maurice's passing must be a terrible shock to his loved ones.
