It's been on the way out for years.
Many cars have CD players now.

I'm sure that the popularity of car cassette players is because you can buy a CD and copy it to cassette for use in the car, with all the attendant security advantages.
One reason why car CD players are on the increase is because CD copying is now easy. I notice that car CD players make a point of saying that they can play CDR's - they wouldn't do that without a reason.

The continuing sale of cassette players seems odd, but they will be dying out too. At the moment lots of people still have music on cassette, accumulated over years - but players break and have to be replaced.

Bottom line: Pre rec cassettes aren't sold because not enough people are buying them. Cassette players will continue to be sold until the same happens with them.
