Thread Name: Obit: Al Hirschfeld
Subject: RE: Obit: Al Hirschfeld
There is a little more info on Al Hirschfeld in the earlier obit. He was 99 and still working. He also has an active site you can visit that may tell you more. Search his name on Google.
He and Gulyas Williams were my favorites when it came black and white cartooning. Their work in The NewYorker has been unsurpassed for years in both style and humor.
There are a few still alive who were the real pioneers in this field. When Wil Eisner, Joe Simon, and a couple others pass away that era in American sequencial art will sadly close.
The skill with line weight and pen and ink that Hirschfeld possessed was and is on a parr with Alex Raymond, Hal Foster, Frank Frazetta, Carl Barks, Bourne Hogarth and Roy Krenkel.
All acclaimed masters in their fields so it would be pointless to argue who was better. It is just sad to note that another master of his craft has left us.
