Subject: Bob Dylan - Herman Melville connexion
As I mentioned in my request for music to "I dreamed I saw St. Augustine", there has been some recent discussion of Dylan on Ishmail; here's some of it, in case any Mudcatters have pertinent info to contribute:
>>> "Arne od Weegh" 02/10/03 12:06 PM >>> Not long ago I asked on a Dylan newsgroup what he is saying AFTER the dedication, but no one was able to understand Dylan's words. On one of the tracks on Dylan's Basement Tapes (the officially released album), he sings "Whatcha doing, Moby-Dick?" and on Bringing It All Back Home, there is some mentioning of Captain Ahab in the song before mr. Tambourine Man.
A more recent event is the phrase "Time Out Of Mind" which is the title of Dylan's 1997 (slighty overrated) album. One of the paragraphs in Chapter 87 of Moby-Dick also begins with this phrase. For a discussion of its source, go to rec.music.dylan, accessible by going to Google, there click on groups (or discussions) and then search for "dylan".
Most obvious resemblance between the two geniuses is their frequent allusions to the Bible, and their mysteriousness, of course.
