When you're out of your normal environment, the normal social restraints tend to be absent. If they are the only things stopping you behaving in certain ways, you are likely to behave that way.

Maybe that's what is meant when people talk about going away "to find themselves." The corollary to that is if you do that you might not much like what you find.
