The best advice I ever got related to this was from my dentist, who pointed out that I was suffering because I had made my own happiness and peace of mind dependent on my relationships with other people, and those, by nature, were always in flux--to find peace of mind, it was necessary to concentrate on my relationship with God(which, he pointed out, meant the cosmic totality, not some guy with a wizard hat and black framed glasses), which is the only thing that can be truly constant--
