Here's a heart-warming story;typical of the man.
LONDON (Reuters) - Former Beatle Paul McCartney made $1 million (630,000 pounds) for charity by playing one of the smallest concerts of his career at a fan's 50th birthday party, his agent says.

McCartney performed 19 songs, including classics such as "Let it Be", "Yesterday" and "Back in the USSR", in front of just 150 people at a club in San Diego, California.

"Normally I don't do this sort of gig, but I was chuffed to do it because it was a win-win show," McCartney said in a statement released on Sunday in London by his spokesman Geoff Baker.

Financier Ralph Whitworth secretly hired McCartney to perform at his wife's party at the Ranch Blues Club on Saturday night.

Wendy Walker Whitworth, senior vice president of CNN, was stunned when McCartney took to the stage to perform in front of her family and friends.

"She was totally gobsmacked and she was reduced to tears by the shock of it all," Baker said.

McCartney presented her with 50 roses and they danced together to the Beatles song "Birthday".

Among the guests were CNN's Larry King and NBC's Katie Couric.

McCartney said his fee would go to Adopt-A-Minefield, a campaign group which seeks to clear mines and help victims.

"This money will enable Adopt-A-Minefield to fit new limbs for thousands of landmine survivors so that they can walk again -- this birthday party will be a great present for them," the singer's wife Heather Mills McCartney said in a statement.
