As Stilly River Sage says, insurance coverage has become too expensive. To obtain proper insurance for valuable items, an outside appraisal and description are required for each item. The costs are such that the only feasible alternative is to donate to an institution. They can give out a tax receipt, but here in Canada that is only good if one has a large earned income on which the receipt can be used.
