According to the page I linked to above, the Puritans were deliberately breaking tradition with promoting new names for their children that did not conform to the older Catholic tradition of using saint's names. They not only used the virtues, but also named children with phrases, like "...Preserved from Temptation, Make Peace with the Lord, and Deliverance Through Enduring Faith. For practical reasons, these names were shortened over time to Preserved, Makepeace, and Deliverance."
