Being a tightwad I wonder whether the present winder could be modified by partially filling the slot (maybe with synthetic resin) so that it doen't slot down quite so far. Or perhaps by a little judicious sawing down of the block in which the slot sits.

Seem a pity to have to buy a new one before you've properly wrecked the old.
