Here's one possibility. Say I open a music program, such as Noteworthy, and after a while I minimize it. Then I try to use MIDI for something else, either something on the Web or a new Noteworthy file. I find that MIDI doesn't function. That's because the first application, even though minimized, has dibs on MIDI. It has to be closed before the new program can use MIDI.
