Bill D,
Those audio programs seem to be continually trying to one-up each other, and if you log onto a site with one program favored over another, up it pops and asks to be default for everything. I recently downloaded WinAmp, an am trying to keep it as default. I haven't had much time to test it yet.
John, I agree, Control Panel is where those adjustments SHOULD take place, and it was the logical place I tried (several times!) when trying to get my icons to work. I poked around in programs looking for settings that just didn't seem to exist. I found the thing in the start menu completely by accident.
I have a question: with my dual platform, the programs for running movies on my computer DVD are over in the ME side. I have to turn the computer off and restart in ME to play movies. Are there any good free programs that will run DVD movies on my Win2000 Pro side? None of these audio programs include a video component that I've found. I suppose I should go poke around at Tucows and see what they have.
(By the way--if anyone is looking for inexpensive stuff like DVD players, as it goes out of business KMart has some name brand players for about $80. You can find them that inexpensive at some stores but have never heard of the brand. Sylvania is the one that I find quite reliable, not particularly sexy, but solid. $80 for a reliable company, a new machine (not reconditioned like at Fry's, or some of what Sears has been discounting lately. Not bad.)
