I don't see the inaccuracy in the quote. It says that a generation ago "the coffeehouse singalong was close to the center of a pop mainstream". That's right, it was a big movement and in the popular mainstream, but not as big as the exploding rock'n'roll of the same time, therefore not the 'center' of interest.
