Thread Name: Lyr Req: Smoking Song (from Yale)
Subject: Floating Away
Greetings all, I am stumped in my attempts to locate information about this "smoking song" Floating Away Floating away like the fountain's spray, or the snow white plume of maiden, The smoke wreaths rise to the star-lit skies, with blissful fragrance laden Then smoke away, till a golden ray lights up the dawn of the morrow, for cheerful cigar, like a shield, will bar the blows of care and sorrow. There are 5 additional verses-the last beginning with "the dark-eyed train of the maids of Spain..." There are 2 fraternities that have this song in their songbooks. Vermont's Lambda Iota, founded as a secret smoking society (Lorillard Institute)in 1836,incorporated this song in 1853. Authors? Sources? anything? I appreciate all leads! John
